Program of Studies: Special Education

Thornton Academy continues to provide a continuum of special education services. Programs for identified students are carefully developed based upon your individual needs. These programs include direct instruction, consultation and monitoring services. We also offer related support services that include social work, speech, physical and occupational therapy.

Direct instruction may be offered through classes in mathematics, remedial reading, writing, life skills and vocational experience for all grades. Functional Life Skill classes are offered to students with mild to moderate developmental delays. Academic coaching and support is also delivered in a study hall format in the Learning Center to provide assistance in maintaining skills and success in your mainstreamed educational program

Based upon your Individual Education Program, special educaton teachers may assist in the areas of classroom work completion, quiz and test preparation and project assignments. Some special education teachers also co-teach with classroom teachers in mainstreamed classes.

Transition planning and programming are integral components provided through each Individual Education Program. Career exploration and other appropriate transition-related services are offered to ensure a positive transition to post-secondary opportunities.
