Thornton Academy's varsity field hockey team enjoyed its most successful season in school history in 2015, earning the program's first regional title with a 4-1 win over Cheverus under the direction of head coach Lori Smith '88.
Emma Arenstam Campbell '04 has turned the dance program into a powerhouse that performs three dance concerts per year, integrates dance into both theatrical and orchestral performances, and sends students to out-of-state conventions.
Middle School Social Studies teacher Heidi Brewer traveled to Cambodia in February as President of the Board of Directors for the Cambodian Arts and Scholarship Foundation.
Student and faculty research projects in the Science-Technology-Engineering-Math program frequently offer unique opportunities to photograph, videotape, and write about Thornton academics. Featured here is Josh Delcourt's Eastern Gray Squirrel Mark and Recapture Project in his Maine Fish and Wildlife course which, by the way, captured, marked, and released ten gray squirrels over a two week period in the fall of 2015.
Thornton Academy and the Saco Museum were pleased to host Portland Press Herald Arts Editor Bob Keyes this week as he stopped by to explore the museum's exhibit of artwork by arts educators from the Maine Art Education Association, including both Jodi Thomas and Jennifer Merry of Thornton Academy.
Sometimes, little more than a swaying tree canopy and the bellowing of one's own breath mark great athletic achievements. This is the case for two-time Peace Corps volunteer, former wildlife biologist, and Thornton science teacher Mike Carbone who runs through the mountains for insane distances that require consumption of 200-300 calories per hour. In this fall 2015 Postscripts interview, Mike explains his sport and shares his experience this summer with champion ultrarunner Scott Jurek whose successful attempt at a new record running the Appalachian Trail became embroiled in controversial national news.
Thornton Academy Middle School has built a climate of respect under the leadership of alumna Tiffany Robert '00 in the middle school's first decade.
Mrs. Roula Maalouf teaches Arabic and French at Thornton Academy. Learn more about her in this video profile.
Two years after the New Media Center classrooms opened at Thornton Academy, faculty are busy teaching students everything from 3D Graphics to Computer Programming to Journalism in the high-tech classrooms. Postscripts visited one of these teachers—Hope Hall—both in the classroom and at home on her Sunflower Creamery farm in Cumberland.
Honors Biology faculty Jessica Cardosi knew during her junior year of high school that she wanted to become a science teacher. Now she's leading Thornton students through their first experiment in biochemistry.
