Welcome
As one of New England’s oldest college preparatory schools, Thornton has been educating its students for almost 200 years. Over this time we have come to describe what we do as “preparing students for a changing world.”
I am thrilled to learn of your interest in Thornton Academy. Founded in 1811, Thornton is an independent, coeducational middle school and high school serving grades 6 through 12 located in the southern Maine coastal town of Saco. In addition to our day program, we have a new international boarding school, which serves students grades 9 through 12 from around the globe.

As you learn more about Thornton Academy, I hope you will come to understand and appreciate the amazing community that is Thornton. As one of New England’s oldest college preparatory schools, Thornton has been “preparing students for a changing world” for almost 200 years. While Thornton is particularly proud of its extensive academic offerings our faculty and staff also recognize that not only does learning happen in the classroom, but also in the hallways, playing fields and in the surrounding community.

Small classes and individual attention allow our faculty to do an outstanding job of finding the promise in every student. Through its extensive course offerings, Thornton provides an opportunity for students to find an academic area that excites them. They are given the opportunity to become dynamic, critical thinkers who excel in college and beyond because of what begins here.

In keeping with this philosophy, Thornton embarked on a new chapter by adding a residential life program that included a new state-of-art dormitory for grades 9 through 12. Thirty-eight students from around the globe now join our day students on this wonderful campus. This residential program added a new dimension to the high quality of our community and to the education we provide by extending the opportunities of our fine school to a new and broader range of students.

As you navigate the website please look closely at all that Thornton has to offer. Read the descriptions of our academic program. Discover the numerous events taking place on campus everyday. Meet the amazing faculty and staff that lie at the heart of Thornton. Explore the residential program.

I look forward to answering any questions you may have, and I invite you to please contact me at any time.

Sincerely,

Mark Powers
Director of Admission

Breaking Ground for New Dormitory

On June 10, Thornton Academy held a groundbreaking ceremony for its second dorm on campus. The 19,660 square-foot building will house 42 students and 4 faculty apartments. It opens in the fall of 2011. At the event, school officials also re-dedicated the James E. Nelson Residence Hall, celebrated the successful first year of Thornton's boarding program, and kicked off a new homestay program.
