 | Thornton Academy provides a dynamic school experience for students in grades 6-12 that lives up to our mission of preparing students for a changing world.
About the TA campus: Thornton is an independent school located in Saco, Maine, on an 80-acre campus. All students enjoy access to Garland Auditorium, Linnell Gymnasium, Hyde Library, Hill Stadium, tennis courts, athletic fields and plenty of open space. Although our school is nearly 200 years old, students benefit from a technology-enhanced environment that's full of smart boards in the classroom, computers located throughout campus, and wireless access for laptop use.
Middle school program: Thornton's faculty and staff are devoted to helping students succeed—both academically and personally. Students at Thornton Academy Middle School (TAMS) thrive in a close-knit community where opportunities abound in academics, the arts and athletics. There are two drama performances each school year, sports teams for grades 7-8, homework help offered after school, foreign language instruction in all three grades, and many opportunities for advanced students. Read Thornton's Program of Studies on this page (under "Downloads") to learn more. All classrooms include a smart board, allowing teachers to fully integrate technology and web resources into the classroom. Every student in grades 6-8 has a laptop. In addition, a course management system called TAOnline allows students to learn and work in a virtual environment. The middle school serves students from Arundel and tuition-paying students from communities throughout southern Maine. Many TA students in grades 9-12 choose to give back to the middle school program by participating in Thornton's Mentoring Program, which brings high school students into TAMS classrooms.
High school program: Building on a tradition of strong college-preparatory programming, Thornton's academic approach encourages creative and critical thinking and self-discovery through comprehensive core offerings in English, math, history, science, fine arts and wellness as well as in a full range of advanced placement, honors, foreign language, fine and performing arts, wellness, technology and business courses. By combining a strong core program with a range of electives, students’ abilities are challenged and their interests are met. Thornton strives to provide a personalized approach while being large enough to offer a broad range of opportunities for students. During the 2010-11 school year, TA will offer courses in 7 foreign languages, 9 AP courses, evening courses and online courses made possible by TAOnline, a virtual course management system. Classroom space on campus also includes a renovated studio that supports a full time dance program. Technology and business courses are supported by three computer laboratories housing the latest Mac technology. A number of classrooms including every room in the science department have full classroom sets of laptops. Our Library and Academic Commons serves as a research and information center as well as a resource for interdisciplinary themes.
