Grades 6 – 12

Growing up – It's about finding your place...

In History
Founded in 1811, Thornton is approaching its 200th anniversary in 2011. Join one of Maine's oldest educational institutions. Add your story to our illustrious history.

As a student at Thornton Academy, you will join a strong community of learners, alumni and friends. Perhaps you will become one of our Distinguished Alumni or be awarded our Public Service Award. Thornton alumni have been governors, senators, authors, painters, inventors, discoverers, involved citizens, and caring family members. Add your talents to our community.

As a student, you can interact with a nearly 11,000-member Alumni Association. Students and alumni have raised funds for Hurricane Katrina victims, the local food pantry, and other community needs. Working together, they have held carnivals, hosted students from abroad, and entertained the community with plays, musicals and concerts. Make connections to a large group of adults who care about your educational experience.

At School
Middle school students become part of a very special community at Thornton Academy-a community of under 200 students and teachers planning, playing and studying together. Your first few days of the school year will start with a variety of community building activities. An orientation program focuses not only on incoming 6th graders and other new students, but on returning students as well. Our middle school teachers and staff will encourage you to explore every corner of your larger school community.

Our high school may be large, but we work hard to feel small and personal. We hold weekly all-school meetings where fellow students can share their interests and where student achievements can be celebrated. Three individuals will be constant throughout your high school years. You will be assigned to a small group of 10 to 15 classmates, meeting with the same advisor all four years. Your dean will follow your class from freshman through senior years, handling issues related to interactions with adults and students on campus. You will have the same guidance counselor for all four years as well. Build a community with your advisor, your dean, your counselor and your teachers.

We want you to be involved. Find a group or club pursuing your interests. You can even start a new group if one doesn't exist. Expand your circle of friends through shared interests.

Within the Community
We encourage our students to think beyond our campus boundaries. Our students take flowers to local seniors on Valentine's Day. They adopt families at Christmas. They collect bottles and cans to purchase life-sustaining goods for Third World countries. They explore the workplace to learn about and experience possibilities after high school.

Being involved, having a role-it is important to us that all students find their place-today and tomorrow. Come join our community.
