Where Individuals Matter
be an individual with us

Grades 6 – 12

Growing up – It takes personal support...

From the very first day on campus, students at Thornton are surrounded by adults who care.

At the Middle School Level
As a middle school student, you will become part of a very special community at Thornton Academy. The very size of our middle school-under 200 students-ensures every student is well known by every teacher.

Personalized education is key at the middle school level, and our instructional program supports this philosophy. Sixth grade classrooms are "self-contained," with homeroom teachers providing instruction in all core content areas. While older students are assigned to a homeroom, they also rotate among the 7th/8th grade team of teachers-each specializing in a core subject. Educational technicians and specialists offer classes in the arts, health/wellness and foreign language A guidance counselor, dedicated to helping students transition successfully from elementary to middle school and preparing 8th graders for the challenges of high school, also rounds out the middle school faculty.

In short, every member of the middle school faculty, including the headmaster, participates in team-building activities and knows you and your classmates on an individual basis.

Throughout High School
At the high school, every Thornton day starts with Advisory. You will join a small group of students who meet for 15 minutes each morning. Your faculty advisor will update you on daily school life, invite your comments and observations around school issues, and generally keep in touch with each of you. Advisory groups become tightly knit. Over four years, the level of trust and understanding that develops between you and your advisor will be crucial as you choose courses, play sports, become involved in activities and make plans for your future. Find your way with us.

Five counselors staff the Guidance Office at the high school. As a high school student, you will stay with a single counselor from your first anxious-but-excited day of freshman year to a pride-filled graduation day. Compare classes, bounce ideas around, explore options for the future, get some perspective when the world seems crazy...at every milestone, you will have an experienced caring counselor to listen and help. Explore your options with us.

And don't forget the Thornton faculty-experts not only in subjects like math, history and English, but also skilled in working with students whose learning styles vary. At both levels, Thornton teachers are always seeking better, new and different ways to help you gain the knowledge and skills you will need to achieve the Thornton mission of "preparing students for a changing world." Reach your potential with us.

Growing older will happen without any help from adults in your life. Growing up will be enhanced by adults who are willing to give thoughtful effort, offer careful guidance, and show a generous spirit. Grow up with us.
