2019 Graduate Spotlights: Cordelia Atwood Perry, Leo Zhikang Xie, and Aislin Travis

Cordelia Atwood Perry, TA tennis star and talented 2-D/3-D artist, proves it's possible to be strong both artistically as well as athletically. Ms.Perry played on varsity all four years and was captain for the past two but still views the Visual Arts hallway as her favorite spot on the TA campus.

Most-loved Thornton Academy Traditions & Memories? Why?

"During Sophomore year I received an email that I was receiving an award for my art in the yearly gallery and I had no idea what the award was. I left practice early and showed up in my tennis gear to find that I had received an award for the best 2-D art in the show. It was a pastiche of Van Gogh’s The Portrait of Doctor Gachet with myself as Doctor Gachet. It was my first award for art and also my first time working in oil pastel. Surprises all around!"

Favorite Class, Teacher, or Extra-Curricular?

"Mrs. Merry, Mrs. Altman, and Ms. Thomas all have a very special place in my heart due to how much they have helped me grow as an artist and person over these years. In senior year it is nearly impossible for me to have a day where I don’t talk or see all three due to my classes and the fact that I constantly hang around the art wing. In addition to those three, Mr. Frost was an incredible tennis coach during freshman and sophomore year which would be remiss of me not to mention here. It’s hard for me to name a single teacher because so many teachers have influenced my life in a positive way."

What You're Most Proud of / Favorite Project?

"Recently this past year I’ve taken AP Studio Art. Overall, I improved tremendously over the course of that class. While I’ve had some works of art that aren’t my favorite there are also some very incredible pieces of work that I created that I am proud of the effort and quality I’ve put in over the year."

Where Do You See Yourself in 10 Years?

"Ideally? Living a fulfilling life making art while dressed in very dramatic clothes. A spiral staircase is not a necessary part of the situation but I would not be upset if it was included. Realistically? In debt from college. My backup plan if art school fails is to become a mortician. It’s a good conversation starter."

Goodluck Cordelia - crossing our fingers that a spiral staircase comes your way🤞 We know your passion and creativity will propel you wherever the art world takes you!

Leo Zhikang Xie, an international student from China, has found home in Saco, Maine for the past 3 years. Leo has participated in tennis, Chess Team, National History Day, Math Team, International Fair, TedX, and the Action Team.

Favorite Spot on the TA Campus & Why?

“The bench behind MB - beautiful sightseeing. There are lots of things here that made me love TA, especially the natural environment. The trees the forest, squirrels, rivers, fresh air, everything. In China, since I live in a big city, I was surrounded by high buildings, roads, cars, people, not many trees, so this beautiful natural environment is one of the things I love most. I will remember this beautiful place everyday.”

Congrats and Good luck to you Leo - We were so lucky to have you as part of our TA family!

Aislin Travis took stage as a member of the Dance Company, Chamber Singers, Student Council, Ballroom Club, and TA Players. Ms.Travis finds comfort and power as she performs - "Through student council and the theater and music departments, I've been able to become more confident in myself and have discovered interests I did not know I had."

Favorite Spot on the TA Campus & Why?

My favorite spot on campus is the dance studio, because of the growth I've been able to achieve there. From learning from Mrs. Campbell in the 8th grade, to building a dance with Rory Freeman, all the way to creating my own choreography for dance company, that room has seen my best and worst days.

Most-loved Thornton Academy Traditions & Memories? Why?

Since I was in elementary school, my favorite tradition has been senior assembly. Back then, I attended to see my TA mentors, and once I became a student, I fell in love with the act of moving on to the next set of bleachers and seeing the excitement of graduating seniors. It's a great end to the school year, and introduction into the next.

Favorite Class, Teacher, or Extra-Curricular?

My favorite class, whether he knew it or not, was Mr. Parise's APUSH. He made every lecture so interesting, and opened my eyes to a lot of relevant social issues that are not typically discussed.

Where Do You See Yourself in 10 Years?

In 10 years, I hope to be immersed in the professional dance community, and using my experiences from high school and college to help other young people!

Congratulations Aislin - we know your passion for dance and social issues will lead you far in life! 🎓
