Thornton Academy’s Student Council is making Valentine’s Day just a little bit sweeter for residents of retirement and assisted living homes in the Saco area this year. The club will deliver bouquets of flowers to each resident. Student Council members gathered in the atrium of Thornton Academy to arrange the flowers and attach a hand-written note to each bouquet.
Student Council advisor Caryn Ford and Student body treasurer Mia Taranko led the efforts to organize the project. Taranko reached out to all of the homes to find out the number of residents to ensure that every individual receives flowers.
"It's the highlight of every resident’s year. They look forward to it and have been asking ‘When are our flowers coming?’ So they are excited for our delivery,” Ford said.
Student Council leads many community service projects throughout the school year, including purchasing and wrapping gifts for needy families at the holiday season, spearheading a food drive in the fall, and supporting Mary’s Walk and other fundraising events. Taranko supports Student Council’s mission of giving back to those in the greater Saco area.
"It's reaching out into the community, rather than just staying within TA. It’s exciting to see the reactions from the residents,” Taranko said.
