Chess team making its mark
Thornton Academy Chess Club

Congratulations to the TA Chess team for a strong showing at the State Championship meet in Lewiston.

Our high school team of senior Colby Wise, junior John Pham, and sophomore Alexander Chan took first place in the Reserve Division, and our middle school team of Aiden Carle (grade 6) Colin Cleary (7) Lily Goldman (6) Caroline Colson (7) finished in the top 10 in their first-ever state competition.

The first-place finish in the Reserve Division, which consists of less-experienced players, is especially impression given that two members of the high school team have played chess less than a year and were competing in their first tournament.

“We're proud of all of these students who represented themselves and TA so well,” says Chess Club Advisor Mr. Tom Rackmales. “It was a great event and we look forward to many more years of chess enjoyment and success.”
