Faculty Friday: Matt Amoroso
Jeff Christenbury

Today's Friday Faculty Feature takes us to the world of science with Mr. Matt Amoroso! This is Mr. Amoroso's 14th year at TA.  He graduated from South Portland High School in 1990 when he was just 16, but he didn't go back to college until he was 24, so he got a late start teaching.  He got his BA in Physics from USM and did a year of Graduate work at Brandeis.  After teaching for a few years at a small Catholic school in Newton Massachusetts, Mr. Amorosos moved back to Maine and started working at TA in the fall of 2006.  He teaches Physics at lots of levels and occasionally Astronomy.  He's also the advisor for the Anime club and sometimes the Table Top Gamers.  Five years ago, Mr. Amorosos started driving a van of kids who come from the Portland area to attend TA to help support our private pay day student program.

1. What is the best thing about teaching at TA?

I get to teach the subject I love best to some of the smartest kids in southern Maine. Knowing that these brilliant minds are going to have awesome success at the next level and that I helped even a little bit makes my job unbelievably rewarding. This year has been tough, but usually I'm the happiest teacher at TA because I love my job so much.

2. What is a favorite TA memory?

I once had a student so brilliant that I had to create all sorts of brand new problems for her to make sure she was challenged. Some of those problems grew into lesson plans for future classes. When she graduated I gave her my favorite graduate level book on mathematical physics. This young woman is now getting her Ph.D. in Mathematics!

3. What do you hope for your students?

I was such a terrible high school student myself. I didn't find myself until relatively late in life. It's never too late to develop a love of learning. From the moment that I uncovered my love of learning I have never once been bored. Think of that! Decades of zero boredom. I very much wish that for everyone.

4. What do you hope for the future of TA?

I hope to bring a Philosophy class back to TA. When that class was working well we were learning together at an astonishing rate.
