TA names new varsity volleyball coach

Kayla Arthurs has been named head varsity volleyball coach at Thornton Academy.

Kayla began her volleyball journey as a freshman at Biddeford High School and continued to develop her skills through travel volleyball with Maine Juniors. Her passion for the sport led her into coaching, beginning in 2013 as the freshman coach at Thornton Academy.

Kayla moved into the junior varsity coaching role in 2018, guiding the team through several successful seasons while preparing athletes for the varsity level. She has served as an assistant coach for the varsity team since 2021, playing a key role in guiding the program to its first-ever state championship appearance this past fall.

"As the leader of our program, Coach Arthurs brings a commitment to Thornton Academy and our volleyball community,” says Lance Johnson, athletic director. “Kayla has developed as a coach and is passionate about supporting our student-athletes on and off the court."

During the winter months, Kayla coaches the Saco Middle School club volleyball program, working with 7th- and 8th-graders to build fundamental skills and prepare them for high school volleyball.

Outside of coaching, Kayla works as a Quality Auditor at Unum. She lives in Buxton with her husband, Jake, and their two sons.
