TA’s Homecoming Weekend Inspires School Spirit and Community Togetherness

This past weekend, Thornton Academy hosted its annual Homecoming weekend, filled with events for the whole family. Alumni, students, prospective families, and friends of TA joined together on campus to celebrate the school, raise money for local food banks, recognize alumni, and cheer on the football team.

The weekend kicked off bright and early Friday morning as Thornton Academy participated in the WGME School Spirit Challenge. This challenge raises money for the Good Shepherd Food Bank. High schools from across Maine compete to raise money and food donations. Each week, a different school hosts a rally that is broadcast live on WGME.

Senior Gabe Paulin is a member of Dance Company and performed at the rally. “It’s just been a blast. I’m just happy we get to raise money, perform doing what we love, and give back to the community.” said Paulin.

Homecoming events continued Friday night with the community bonfire. Held on the JV softball field at Thornton Academy, community members gathered around the giant fire. The TA pep band provided music, and the four classes at the high school brought visual representations of the school’s four pillars: respect, responsibility, compassion, and investment.

The annual induction ceremony for new members of the Thornton Academy Athletic Hall of Fame was held Saturday morning. New inductees this year include Fred Stackpole ’56, Art Bishop '46, the Veterans basketball team of ‘45-’46, Sandy Brochu Bilodeau '89, Derrick Martin '92, and Craig Thibeau '87. Members of the TA Athletic Hall of Fame are recognized for excellence and contributing to the legacy of athletics at Thornton Academy.

During Saturday’s festivities The Admissions Team hosted their annual Fall Open House to showcase the school in all its glory, welcoming families and students from all over southern Maine and New Hampshire. Student ambassador “Big Sibs” led campus tours and shared their experiences during their time at Thornton.

The Golden Trojans prevailed in the homecoming football game, defeating the Sanford Spartans by a score of 48-0. The football program also recognized senior football players before the game, as it was the last regular season home game.
