Thornton Academy Recognized Again as an Apple Distinguished School

Thornton Academy is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2018-2021 for the second consecutive time. Thornton Academy's integrative approach to technology through a one-to-one technology device initiative, dedication to staff training, and commitment to technology access for all were reasons for the recognition.

Globally, there are fewer than 400 school that have been recognized as Apple Distinguished schools, and fewer than 100 in the United States.

Launched in the fall of 2014 to equip students and staff with the tools necessary for success in a 21st century learning environment, the Thornton Academy 1:1 tech initiative strategically aligns Professional Development and curriculum. Thornton Academy teachers have the support and freedom to implement the iPads and laptops to best serve the goals of the lesson.

Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching, and the school environment and have documented results of academic accomplishment.

Today's recognition of Thornton Academy's innovation and leadership in the use of technology affirms our commitment to an integrated and comprehensive STEM program that will best prepare students for college and the workforce."

The selection of Thornton Academy as an Apple Distinguished School highlights its success as an innovative and compelling learning environment that engages students and provides tangible evidence of academic accomplishment. From boat building projects in engineering courses where designs to come to life, to interactive history lessons that that assess student learning in real time, technology integration has elevated the level of authentic learning experiences in our community. State-of-the-art STEM and New Media facilities, combined with a robust mentoring and Professional Development program for faculty members, ensure our commitment to continued excellence in innovative curriculum design. Thornton Academy, founded in 1811, is a co-educational, private boarding and day school serving grades 6 through 12. Located in the city of Saco, it is one of the nation's longest operating independent schools and one of only three Apple Distinguished Schools in Maine. The Academy offers a diverse academic curriculum including more than 200 courses, a new $2 million STEM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Math) Center, an award-winning visual and performing arts program, competitive athletics including 24 different sports teams, and a wide selection of extracurricular activities.
