Thornton Academy Recognized Again as an Apple Distinguished School

Thornton Academy is pleased to announce that it has been recognized as an Apple Distinguished School for 2018-2021 for the second consecutive time. Thornton Academy's integrative approach to technology through a one-to-one technology device initiative, dedication to staff training, and commitment to technology access for all were reasons for the recognition.

Globally, there are fewer than 400 school that have been recognized as Apple Distinguished schools, and fewer than 100 in the United States.

Launched in the fall of 2014 to equip students and staff with the tools necessary for success in a 21st century learning environment, the Thornton Academy 1:1 tech initiative strategically aligns Professional Development and curriculum. Thornton Academy teachers have the support and freedom to implement the iPads and laptops to best serve the goals of the lesson.

Apple Distinguished Schools are centers of innovation, leadership, and educational excellence that use Apple products to inspire creativity, collaboration, and critical thinking. They showcase innovative uses of technology in learning, teaching, and the school environment and have documented results of academic accomplishment.

Thornton Academy Headmaster Mr. Rene Menard said, "Thornton Academy is honored to be recognized as an educational leader in technology. The Thornton Academy Board of Trustees has made a significant commitment to STEM education. We are proud of the science, math, and engineering opportunities at Thornton Academy that allow qualified students to skip a year of college and enter UMAINE's Engineering program with sophomore status. Today's recognition of Thornton Academy's innovation and leadership in the use of technology affirms our commitment to an integrated and comprehensive STEM program that will best prepare students for college and the workforce."
