History and Social Sciences

Learning from the past helps us develop connections today.

The Thornton Academy History Department strives to give our students a better understanding of the world around them. Through understanding cultures from around the globe and conflicts that have plagued humanity in the past, we are better able to grapple with today's issues. Our hope is that students graduate from Thornton Academy with a curiosity of the world around them and the willingness and ability to be engaged citizens.

featured class: AMERICA'S RESPONSE TO A CHANGING WORLD

In this course, we discuss issues that our country faces, try to gain a better understanding of them, why people view these issues differently, and why it is so hard to come to a solution. Students explore the ever-changing nature of the world around us without the constraints of a rigid curriculum.

My history teacher is considerate and truly cares about the success of his students. You can tell from one class with Mr. Cote that teaching isn't just a job for him, it's his livelihood. Mr. Cote's search for further excellence and knowledge has truly inspired me and has forever made my TA experience memorable.
