Middle School Academics–
Supporting Individual Learners

At Thornton Academy Middle School (TAMS), every student is seen and heard.

Our philosophy is grounded in care, connection, and high expectations for every learner. We believe middle school should be a place where students are known, challenged appropriately, and supported as individuals. Within a small, close knit community on a larger campus, students experience both the comfort of strong relationships and the opportunity to grow within a broader school environment.

Small Community, Big Learning

At TAMS, our intentional practices center on meeting each student where they are and supporting their growth as independent learners. Our approach is guided by heart as much as it is by academics, ensuring that every student feels a true sense of belonging while being encouraged to reach their full potential.

Personalized Learning Plans

Our Personalized Learning Plans (PLPs) help students set goals, reflect, and take ownership of their learning.

Advanced Academic Challenge

High school course opportunities are available for 8th grade students who demonstrate that they are ready for academic challenge.

Families as Partners

Families are important partners in this process, using tools such as the Parent Goals Worksheet and participating in two conferences each year to stay connected and engaged.

It's All Here!

A wide range of extracurricular and athletic opportunities that encourage students to build connections beyond the classroom and stay actively engaged in school life.

The Right Balance

A focus on academic excellence is balanced with care, relationships, and student well-being.

Intention that Prepares Students for Success

6th Grade

Sixth grade is an exciting and supportive year where students grow academically, creatively, and socially. Our students strengthen their skills in reading, writing, and mathematics while making meaningful real world connections, and they explore science and social studies through hands-on learning and a global perspective. Opportunities in art, music, and physical education foster creativity, expression, and overall well being. We also place a strong emphasis on social emotional learning, helping students build self awareness, collaboration skills, and responsible decision making. Our goal is to ensure every student feels supported, confident, and connected as they become active members of our school community.

7th Grade

Seventh grade is a year of increased independence, deeper thinking, and meaningful personal growth. Students are challenged to think critically, communicate clearly, and take greater ownership of their learning across all subject areas. In English language arts and mathematics, they continue to build strong foundational skills while applying them to more complex concepts and real world problem solving. Science and social studies emphasize inquiry, analysis, and a broader understanding of global issues and perspectives. Opportunities in art, music, and physical education allow students to further develop their creativity, collaboration, and personal interests. Social emotional learning remains a priority, as students strengthen their sense of identity, resilience, and responsibility within a supportive and respectful school community.

8th Grade

Eighth grade is a pivotal year academically as students prepare for the transition to high school with increased confidence, independence, and responsibility. Students are expected to think more deeply, engage in complex problem solving, and communicate their ideas with clarity across all subject areas. In English language arts, mathematics, science, and social studies, they refine essential skills while tackling more rigorous and analytical work. Opportunities in art, music, and physical education continue to support creativity, collaboration, and personal growth. Students also continue to build important skills in responsibility, collaboration, and self direction as they get ready for the challenges and opportunities of high school. For students who are ready for additional academic challenges, opportunities are available to take select courses at the Upper School level.

TAMS provided a high quality education, while nurturing our daughters into responsible students and community members. The academic opportunities and curriculum offered by TAMS prepared them for a seamless transition to the upper school, including offering high school level classes for credit while still at TAMS, helping establish a strong and successful path to graduation with honors.  The staff and administration care deeply about their students to ensure success, and worked tirelessly to develop our girls into their highest potential.
