Thornton Academy welcomes students from over 25 towns in Southern Maine, as well as international students from all over the world. A Thornton Academy education provides students with the solid base of academics and social excellence to become successful later in life. 

Thornton Academy accepts applications on a rolling basis throughout the year, though we encourage students to apply early. The application process is simple, and our team is here with you every step of the way. 

Step-by-step admissions process

Step 1: Complete the online application

Create an online portal, pay the $100 application fee, and fill out the online application: Thornton Academy Online Application

Once you've submitted your application and created an online portal, you can track your application process and status online. Please keep track of your username and password, as you will need them later in the enrollment process.

Step 2: Submit required materials

Required additional materials:

  • Three letters of recommendation: two teacher recommendations, one personal recommendation. The recommender can submit the online form (linked above), or submit the letter directly to admissions@thorntonacademy.org

  • Transcripts for the past three years - In the original language and translated to English

  • Copy of passport

  • Test results are not required, but if you'd like to submit results from an English test, we welcome these as part of the application review

Financial Aid

Thornton Academy offers financial aid to qualifying families. To be considered for financial aid, applicants must request financial aid at the time of application.

Application FAQs

I submitted my application through the online portal... now what?

After you've submitted your application, required documents, and completed your interview, our Admissions Committee will review your file. This process takes up to a week. Then we will contact you with an admission decision. 

What's the visa process like?

Upon enrollment, Thornton Academy will issue an I-20, which allows you to apply for an F-1 student visa.

To receive your I-20, we will need:

  • Affidavit of financial support or bank statement
  • Shipping address including name and phone number of recipient
  • Passport copy

When's the application deadline?

Thornton Academy has rolling admissions, meaning you can apply any time. There is no deadline. We continue to accept students until the dormitories are full, at which point we will start a wait list. 

Do I need to submit test scores?

No test scores are required. But we welcome test scores such as TOEFL, IELTS, ELTIS, SSAT, SAT, etc. as part of your application file. 

How many International Students attend Thornton Academy?

Approximately 200 students from 35 countries. That's approximately 10% of the student body. 

Does Thornton Academy offer ESL support?

At Thornton Academy, we call it English Language Learning (ELL). We offer 4 levels of ELL English classes, 2 ELL History classes, a supported study center during the school day, and test prep after school as a part of our Golden Edge program.

To enroll at Thornton Academy, there are two things you need to do:

To receive your I-20, we will need:

  • Affidavit of financial support or bank statement
  • Shipping address including name and phone number of recipient
  • Passport

You will soon receive an email from the Residential Life staff welcoming you to TA, and in the meantime, feel free to check out our Student Life page. The Res Life staff will send a matriculation packet, information about arriving on campus, and details about the dorms or homestay.
