Athletic Facilities

Great athletes deserve great facilities. At Thornton Academy, we strive to provide our athletes with world-class training and competition venues. Our main facilities include Hill Stadium for outdoor sports and Linnell Gymnasium for indoor use. In addition to these facilities, Thornton Academy has extensive practice and competition fields on our large 80 acre campus. Our facilities include 4 tennis courts, 3 baseball diamonds, 3 softball diamonds, and 5 practice fields. Our swim, ice hockey, and golf teams use facilities within an easy 10 minute drive of campus.

For less competitive sports, the Eastern Trail adjoins campus and provides opportunities for walking, running, and bike riding.

The major indoor athletic and convocation center at Thornton Academy, William Shepherd Linnell Gymnasium, has served the school’s students and the greater community since its opening in 1963. In addition to acting as a practice and competition venue for TA basketball teams for over fifty years, Linnell Gym is also utilized for school assemblies, spring commencement exercises, and wellness classes. The gym also plays a major role in the life of the greater Saco community and has hosted a variety of community and social events such as the Kerryman Pub Road Race/Mary’s Walk, the Children’s Winter Carnival, and the annual college fair.

Some of Thornton’s greatest performers and most memorable moments are linked with Dr. Paul S. Hill, Jr. Stadium, the school’s main outdoor competition venue. In operation since 1980, Hill Stadium has been home to the school’s football, soccer, field hockey, cross country, outdoor track and field, and lacrosse teams and is generally regarded as one of the top high school playing venues in southern Maine. The stadium regularly hosts state and regional events, such as the New England Track & Field Championships. One of the most popular events hosted at Hill Stadium each year is the annual blackout football game.
