Girls have been playing high school basketball competitively at Thornton Academy for over 120 years. The sport of basketball and the program have certainly come a long way since 1897. Recently, the girls brought home the first Western Maine Championship in school history. They have also fundraised more than $75,000 through Hoops For Hope, a charitable organization created to provide financial assistance for those in the fight against cancer. The current and future members of the Thornton Academy girls basketball program will continue to make their impact felt on the court and in the community as they build upon the cultural foundation established by the many that have come before them.

Thornton Academy has a rich history of boys basketball that dates back to its earliest years. The 1920-1921 Thornton boys basketball team coached by Arthur F. Davis claimed the Maine state championship. Coach Jim McGaffin led Thornton Academy to 127 wins and the 1968-1969 Big Seven championship. More recently, under the leadership of current Golden Trojan Coach Bob Davies, the 2008-2009 squad won the Class A state championship.

A number of outstanding players have donned the Maroon and Gold over the years. Bob Warner is the program’s all-time leading scorer with 1218 points. James Morse won the prestigious George Vinall Trophy in to leading the 2008-2009 squad to a state championship Gold Ball. High-scoring forward Andrew Shaw was a two-time all-conference player who was also selected to the Bangor Daily News All-State Team on two occasions.

Today Thornton Academy basketball games are a big part of the social and cultural fabric of the school and bring large numbers of students and community members back to the campus. The Golden Trojans play in the competitive Southwestern Maine Activities Association and compete against some of the best competition in southern Maine.

Practices and home games are played in Linnell Gymnasium.

Tryouts for upper school boys and girls basketball begins at the end of November. While the varsity teams are quite competitive, students with less experience are able to join the other teams. Practice for TAMS soccer begins in early December. There are no tryouts for the TAMS basketball team. In the off-season, some players join club teams to develop their skills.
