Financial Fitness Fair Teaches Juniors Fiscal Responsibility

On Wednesday, May 17, a Financial Fitness Fair was held in Linnell Gymnasium for Thornton Academy’s junior class. Credit unions in Maine founded the event in 2004 as a way to encourage financial responsibility.

Based upon their responses to a career interest survey, students are assigned a salary and a credit score. Students then move through booths set up with banking and financial professionals who assist students in deciding upon savings, housing, clothing, food, student loans, transportation, home furnishings, and entertainment. The “Wheel of Life” booth provides each student a chance to spin and land on an unexpected event (mimicking real life). The fair offers the opportunity for students to understand the fiscal realities of everyday living with factors like income, expenses, and credit score.

Representatives from PeoplesChoice Credit Union, York Country Federal Credit Union, Ocean Communities Credit Union, Saco Valley Credit Union and Biddeford Saco Saving Bank were present and Thornton Academy's Career Center assisted with the event.
