Julianne Marie Andreades, daughter of Laurie Onos and David Onos of Saco, participated in Orchestra, Art Club, Interact, National Honor Society, and TA Swimming and Diving Team. She earned the Honor Roll Award, as well as multiple Academic Excellence and Academic Achievement Awards. She will attend the University of Maine at Farmington to major in Actuarial Science and Mathematics. She plans to study abroad and become an Actuary.
Emily Grace Camire, daughter of Paula and Jason Camire of Saco, participated in cheerleading, lacrosse, National Honor Society, Student Council, and Red Cross Club. She served as a Young School classroom mentor and youth cheerleading coach for Saco Junior Trojans. Emily earned a Certificate of Excellence in Honors Algebra 1, a Certificate of Achievement in Honors Spanish 2, and a Certificate of Achievement in Honors Spanish 3. She also earned the Honor Roll Award all four years and was in the top 10% of her class throughout her time at TA. She will attend the University of Southern Maine to major in Nursing and participate in the Honors Program. She plans on pursuing a master’s degree to work as a Nurse Practitioner.
Noah Ryan Goren, son of Kim and David Goren of Saco, participated in varsity soccer, varsity baseball, indoor track, concert band, jazz band, National Honor Society, and volunteered at Mary's Walk. He was selected to the SMAA All-Conference Team for Varsity Soccer, the SMAA All-Academic Team for Varsity Soccer, earned Honor Roll, received a Certificate of Achievement in Honors Biology, Honors Chemistry, 20th & 21st Century World History, People and World Cultures, and Honors Physical Science. He earned a Certificate of Excellence in Honors Geometry, Honors Pre-calculus, and Honors Algebra 2. Noah was a recipient of the Academic Excellence in Foundations of Personal Fitness and the Rochester Institute of Technology Innovation and Creativity Award. He will attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute to major in Mechanical Engineering.
Kerrigan Evelyn Goudreau, daughter of Frank and Kelly Goudreau of East Waterboro, participated in soccer, Youth Science Club, and volunteered at blood drives. She earned a Certificate of Achievement in AP Language/Composition, a Certificate of Achievement in Honors Forensics in Chemistry, and 1st Honors. She will major in Biology and minor in Environmental Studies at St. Michael's College in Vermont.
Brandon Robert Hall, son of Melissa and Robert Hall of Kennebunk, participated in varsity baseball, National Honor Society, and basketball. He earned Excellence in Honors Geometry, English, History, Graphic Design 1, Honors Modern U.S. History, Junior English, Honors Pre Calculus, Sports in American Culture, Applied Exercise Science and Sports Studies, and Maine Fish and Wildlife; received the Phi Beta Kappa award from Phi Beta Kappa Society of Maine; earned Achievement in Honors Biology, Honors Spanish III, AP Physics 1; was inducted into the National Honor Society; and earned High Honor Roll all years in high school. He will play baseball for Wagner College.
Kyle Holbrook, son of Andrew and Laurie Holbrook of Saco, participated in National Honor Society, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field. He earned a Certificate of Excellence in Honors Algebra 2, Honors Biology, Honors Geometry, and Junior English, as well as a Certificate of Achievement in AP Physics I, AP Human Geography, and Honors Forensics in Chemistry. Kyle will attend Syracuse University to major in Biology and hopes to later on attend medical school to become a physician.
Nicholas Houde, son of Tim and Kelly of Saco, participated in baseball (for three years), Interact Club, and National Honor Society. He won certificates of excellence and achievement in many science classes. He will attend the University of Southern Maine to study Nursing.
Dung T. “Oscar” Huynh, son of Nam Huynh of Thu Ho, Vietnam, participated in soccer, track, the Coffee House, TA's Got Talent Show, Interact Club, TATV, and the New Media Team. He achieved Honor Roll, Top 10% Achievement, Honors Pre-Calculus Achievement, AP Calculus AB Achievement, AP Physics I Achievement, Graphic Design II Excellence, AP Statistics Excellence, and Diploma de Mérito of Honors Spanish I and II. He will study Computer Science at Jacobs University.
Michael Paul Kowash, son of Philip and Eleni Kowash of Saco, participated in Student Council, National Honor Society, football (four years and a Varsity Letter), baseball (four years and a Varsity Letter), TA Football Bottle Drive, and Interact Club, through which he volunteered for Mary's Walk, Beary Fun Day, Children's Winter Carnival, MLK Day of Service, and the Christmas gift drive. He was named to the SMAA All-Academic Team, and received numerous Certificates of Achievement and Certificates of Excellence. As a recipient of the Maine Top Scholar Award, Michael will attend the University of Maine in Orono to major in Mechanical Engineering.
Paige Anna Ruth LeBlanc, daughter of Shannon and MJ LeBlanc of Arundel, participated in lacrosse, volleyball, soccer, basketball, track, Student Council, and the TA mentor program. She achieved First Honors Awards and was the recipient of the Dartmouth College Award. She will attend Erskine College to major in Biology.
Shanyu “Kerrick” Li, son of Xiumei Xu and Zuomin Li of China, participated in Environmental Club, National Honor Society, Maine All-State Choir, Chamber Singers, Varsity Swimming, and Badminton Club. He achieved the Honor Roll Award 2016 and 2017, a Certificate of Excellence for AP Calculus AB and AP Environmental Science, a Certificate of Achievement for English and Astronomy, and was an AP Scholar with Honor. He will attend the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor to study Vocal Performance.
Emily Maynard, daughter of Jonathan Maynard and Christina Tripp-Maynard of Saco, participated in JV and varsity softball in 9th and 10th grade, Interact Club in 11th and 12th grade (through which she participated in numerous volunteer opportunities), and served as Vice President her senior year. Emily also served as the President of National Honor Society her senior year and was very active in the visual arts at TA. She earned the Honor Roll Award throughout high school, a Certificate of Excellence in People & World Cultures, Foundations of Personal Fitness, Photography, AP Studio Art, and Honors English, as well as a Certificate of Achievement in Honors Calculus. She was selected to participate in the Youth Art Exhibit in Augusta, earned three Scholastic Honorable Mentions for individual photography, a Scholastic Art Honorable Mention for her eight-piece portfolio, and her photo "Gray Waters and Dusty Skies" was selected to remain in the Permanent Art Collection at Thornton Academy. She will attend Clark University to double major in Environmental Science and Studio Art.
Anh Tung “Roman” Nguyen, son of Tung Thanh Nguyen of Vietnam, has participated in Math Team, Computer Club, Interact Club, and the International Fair. He has received Recognition of Excellence in Math Team, a Certificate of Achievement in Honors Physics, and Certificate of Excellence AP Calculus BC. He will attend Brandeis University to study Computer Science.
Ha “Anna” Nguyen, daughter of Thanh and Hoa Nguyen of Sai Gon, Vietnam, participated in the All-State Music Festival Mixed-choir, Interact Club, Action Team, Chinese Club, Book Club, and served as Secretary of the National Honor Society. She received a Certificate of Excellence or Certificate of Achievement for most classes in Junior year, the Honor Roll Award, and the Rochester Institution of Technology Innovation and Creativity Award. She will attend Georgia State University to major in Music Technology and minor in Film Studies and Business.
Van Hoang Anh Nguyen, son of Do Thi Thuy Anh and Van Hoa Nguyen of Hanoi, Vietnam, participated in Debate Club and Math Team. He earned the Top 10% of his class and Academic Excellence. He will study Clinical Psychology, Business Management, and Philosophy at the University of Glasgow. While an undergraduate he also hopes to write his own discourse, pursue psychological research with philosophy to help people with their problems even at higher levels of abstractions (metaphysical), as well as to nourish his own knowledge of the world and to truly live. After earning a BS in Business Management, he hopes to earn a master’s degree and Ph.D degree in Psychology.
Justin Pamplona Poitras, son of Elma and Dennis Poitras of Saco, participated in indoor and outdoor track, Interact Club, and National Honor Society. As a Freshman, he earned Achievement in Intro to Physics I, Excellence in Spanish I, and Excellence in Honors Algebra I. As a Sophomore, he earned Achievement in Spanish II, Achievement in Honors Geometry, Excellence in Honors Chemistry, and Excellence in Honors Junior English. As a Junior he earned the Top 10% of his class, was inducted into the National Honor Society, Achievement in Honors Pre-Calculus, Achievement in Honors Junior English, Achievement in Honors Modern U.S. History, Achievement in Honors Biology, Achievement in Honors Physics, and Excellence in Probability & Statistics. He will attend the University of Southern California (USC) to major in Human Performance. He plans to work in the field of Physical Therapy and travel all over the U.S.
Deirdre Rhiannon Ridge, daughter of Sybil and Andrew Wilen of Saco, served as Vice President of Anime Club. She achieved the Honor Roll throughout her time at Thornton and will take a gap year after graduation.
Eva Danielle Sachs, daughter of Laura Cimmino-Sachs and Peter Sachs of Saco, participated in Orchestra, tennis, Red Cross Club, National Honor Society, Interact, and the Ambassador Program. She was in the Top 10%, was selected to the All Academic Team, and received awards of Achievement and Excellence in orchestra, math classes, English, science classes, history, and Latin. Eva was also named Student of the Month and received the St. Anselm College Book Award. She will attend Springfield College to major in Exercise Science with a Pre-Med track.
Reece Owen Saunders, son of Ross and Ann Marie Saunders of Saco, participated in cross country, indoor track, outdoor track, and was Editor of the Tripod yearbook. He earned First Honor Roll Distinction for four years, the Academic Achievement Award (Top 10%), SMAA All-Academic Team, RIT Computing Medal Award, Academic Excellence in 18 classes, Outstanding Contribution Award in Recognition of the Logo Designed for Age Friendly Saco, and a New Media Diploma Endorsement. He will study Graphic Design at York County Community College.
Daniella Eve Sirois, daughter of Lawrence Sirois and Penelope D'ascanio Sirois of Saco, participated in Ambassadors Club to create events for international students at Thornton to help them make friends and feel more comfortable. She also played soccer for two years, was a member of National Honor Society, and participated in the French Exchange (she hosted a student from France for two weeks her Junior year and travelled to France to stay with a host family and attend school there for two weeks in her Senior year). She achieved Honor Roll every year, the Top 10%, and earned a Certificate of Excellence in French. She will attend the University of New Hampshire in the fall to major in Finance and Accounting in the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics.
Benjamin Mason Steva, son of Eric and Barbara Steva of Saco, participated in soccer, baseball, indoor track, National Honor Society, Jazz Band, and Mary's Walk. He was named a SMAA Scholar-Athlete for Sportsmanship Summit, SMAA All-Conference Team (soccer), SMAA All-Academic Team (soccer), Top 10%, Honor Roll, and Excellence in Homeric Greek. He will attend the University of Maine at Orono for Mechanical Engineering.
Kaitlyn Isabel Watt, daughter of Jacqueline and William Watt of Saco, served in Student Council as the Student Body Vice President, was a Captain of TA Action Team, and participated in National Honor Society, Red Cross Club, and the TA Mentor Program. She received the Williams College Award, and a Certificate of Excellence in Spanish her Freshman, Sophomore, and Junior years. She will attend Simmons College in Boston to major in Nursing with a minor in Spanish. She would like to either become a nurse practitioner or a physician’s assistant.
Class of 2017 Valedictorian Annabel Madelyn Winterberg, daughter of Frederick Winterberg and stepdaughter of Shanna Thompson, participated in Debate Team, Model United Nations, National Honor Society, Women and Gender Equal Rights Club, German Club, and the German Exchange. Annabel was the Student of the Month in November 2014, won the Smith Book Award, as well as 16 Certificates of Excellence in various subjects, and various Debate Awards, including 3rd Place in 2014 State Championships and 4th Place in the 2015 State Championships. She will study History at Bowdoin College.
