Boarding

Find your home on campus.

Our Alumni say that the variety of academic and extracurricular programming is what attracted them to Thornton Academy, but the boarding program is what made it their home. Our dormitories are where students learn to live and grow together. For many of our students, it is the first time they are living away from home.

Trust and communication are key. The relationships forged in the dorms between students from all over the world last forever. The Thornton Academy pillars of respect, responsibility, investment, and compassion come to life every day when students and adults navigate the complexity of managing a healthy school-life balance.

Dormitories

Thornton Academy offers four modern, state-of-the-art dormitories. Each room includes a twin bed, desk, wardrobe, bookshelf, and chair for each student. Campus-wide wifi is accessible in all dormitories, and during study hours dorm-mates can work together in the quiet study lounges, or spend free time in the social lounge equipped with big-screen TVs and couches for relaxing.

Trojan Hall was built for the residential community to come together. In addition to the offices for the Residential Life Director and the Residential Nurse, this central dorm offers the largest of all the social lounges and a full kitchen where students gather together.

Dorm Families

Our dormitories are where faculty become family. Our dorm families live in spacious apartments in each hallway of the dorm, and on duty night their doors are open, welcoming students to come in and do homework at the kitchen table, bake cookies, play guitar, and relax after a day of challenging classes.

Our Residential Life staff includes a team of residential advisors, a residential nurse, off-campus duty staff, and our many dorm families. Families who live in the dorms are proud to raise their own children (and pets!) in a safe, nurturing, and multicultural environment.

Dining

Culture is expressed through food, and in our Dining Commons the staff makes sure to celebrate this with their creative and nutritious meals. Residential students eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner made fresh daily from local ingredients.

Daily breakfast choices range from muffins to eggs to fruit to oatmeal. For lunch, students choose from a hot lunch option, salad bar, two daily soups, wrap of the day, and other hot and cold options. Dinner features two proteins, plenty of vegetables, and starches such as rice and potatoes.

Weekend Activities

Feel the sense of accomplishment of summiting a mountain to view the beautiful fall foliage. Find the college of your dreams on a university visit. Experience the rush of cruising down a challenging ski trail. Laugh with your friends over a sushi dinner in Portland. At Thornton Academy, you can choose from hundreds of enrichment activities to customize your experience.

Each weekend, students choose which activities they'd like to join, but can also choose to relax on campus or spend time studying. The fun keeps going during school vacations and long weekends, when students have access to special programming.

Students' health and safety is our top priority. We have a dedicated residential life nurse to assist with students' medical needs. The residential life nurse administers prescription medication, arranges medical appointments, and is certified in First Aid and CPR.

We have so much fun here!
