Thornton Academy Community Forestry Project
Tree program will enhance the beauty of the TA campus
Thornton’s campus stands as a stunning landmark on Main Street. The Thornton Academy Community Forestry Project ensures that Saco families will continue to enjoy the beauty of TA.
If you’ve been on campus recently, you likely noticed that several trees have fallen victim to the destruction of infestation.
Thornton launched a multi-phase project to plant a variety of indigenous trees that will become part of the campus landscape and provide cooling and shade for generations to come.
Science teacher and tree expert Josh Delcourt is working with several community resources: Dale Pierson ’73 and his son Jake of Pierson’s Nursery, along with the York County District Forester for Maine Forest Service, are developing a plan to preserve the trees that can be saved and identify the best native tree species to reforest our campus. The City of Saco’s Parks and Rec Department will also provide planting assistance.
The project is funded through a combination of grants and private donations, including a gift from the Class of 2024.
